Fewer juniors, more meetings

Fewer juniors, more meetings

Anthropic published an internal report over the weekend detailing workforce shifts over the past year, arguing the trends inside the company may signal how artificial intelligence (الذكاء الاصطناعي) will reshape work organization, hiring and labor demand across the broader economy. The company says it has embedded AI deeply into its own workflows, giving it a window into how the tools are changing day-to-day work.

Junior hiring in steep decline

The standout figure is the drop in junior staff as a share of technical departments, from 21 percent at the start of 2025 to 14 percent today. Among new technical hires, the junior share fell even more sharply, from 27 percent to just 9 percent. At the same time, technical departments shrank from 61 percent of total headcount to 56 percent. Anthropic attributes the shift to the natural expansion of business functions as the company grows, and to coding tools that let non-technical employees build software themselves.

Managing Claudes instead of writing code

In an April 2026 survey, 27 percent of employees said they had become more productive thanks to Claude, Anthropic's model, and 20 percent said their role had shifted from doing work to managing Claudes. One employee likened the situation to babysitting: every Claude demands the same level of attention, just like a child bringing worries to the responsible adult. The report notes that human attention and judgment are becoming the productivity bottleneck, because Claude generates a flood of text that must be read and organized.

More code, more meetings

Anthropic says AI adoption has made the company more productive, citing more code per person, more sales closed per rep and more contracts processed. The company acknowledges that more code does not necessarily mean better code or greater business impact, but says it has seen no indications of a decline in code quality. Calendar data show meeting time per employee rose 20 percentage points versus a year ago, and 16 percentage points for technical staff. The company links the increase to the importance of trust and human accountability, with employees repeatedly describing face-to-face coordination as unavoidable.
