Situational Awareness hedge fund under SEC investigation after billions wiped out

The AI-focused hedge fund that dominated Wall Street conversation for several months is now enduring a particularly difficult period. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has begun summoning banks that dealt with the fund, the New York Times reported, with the investigation “targeting institutions that supervised trading and supplied financing.”

Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI employee in his twenties, leads the fund. He funneled all resources into AI investments and enjoyed a phase of phenomenal growth. At the end of July, a sharp decline in AI-sector stocks erased billions of dollars from the fund’s valuation, turning a meteoric success into a stark warning.

The SEC sent subpoenas to the relevant banks and ordered them to “preserve all information” related to the fund. The regulator also stated that “no direct accusation is being made against Situational Awareness at this stage,” and said the probe focuses on the financing pipelines and oversight of trading activity.

The fund did not respond to a TechCrunch inquiry, but told the Times that “a review of high-profile funds is expected” and that it will cooperate “fully with any regulatory request.” The careful wording reflects that no findings have been released yet, but regulatory scrutiny already looms over the business model.

The episode may serve as a warning to an industry that has treated its growth trajectory as unstoppable. A fund that publicly positioned itself as an AI star rode the wave, then partially vanished when the wave broke, and now must answer questions about how its money was managed during the surge.
