Gemini starts calling businesses for you on Pixel 11

Google is rolling out an early experiment that lets paid Gemini subscribers hand off phone calls to local businesses directly to the model. Instead of dialing, navigating phone trees, and waiting on hold, Pixel 11 owners open the Gemini app, ask the assistant to place the call — book a table, check stock, reschedule an appointment — and the model handles the entire exchange, including the wait and the conversation with the human representative.

The key difference from the "Call for me" feature Google announced last year is the ability to intervene. Users see a live transcript of the call on screen and can take over at any moment without disconnecting or starting over. Google says the model identifies itself as AI at the outset, navigates automated menus, and stays on the line until a person answers.

The launch is labeled an "early preview" and is tightly scoped: United States only, Pixel 11 devices only, and only for users enrolled in the Phone by Google public beta who also pay for a Gemini subscription. There is no target date for expanding to other countries, other devices, or the free tier.

In the background, Meta is reportedly building a similar capability for its Muse agent, though the report raises the possibility that those calls would be placed by humans behind the scenes. Google's implementation, by contrast, is described as fully automated end to end, at least in the feature's official definition.
