Anthropic chief Dario Amodei to dine with Trump at White House tonight

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei is expected to dine with President Donald Trump at the White House this evening, Axios first reported and TechCrunch confirmed with a source familiar with the plans. The meeting caps a week in which Amodei also appeared in an unflattering cameo on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, an unusual juxtaposition of television satire and official diplomacy.

It will be the first one-on-one encounter between the two men, who sit on opposite sides of the AI safety debate. Amodei has published a roadmap calling for a slowdown in model development, or at minimum a more cautious pace, while Trump has dismissed criticism of the field as a Democratic hoax — without offering evidence — and has pushed to rebrand the technology as "super intelligence." The divide is not new: both have traded public barbs in recent months over whether early regulation helps or hurts American competitiveness.

Relations between Anthropic and the Trump administration have already been strained. Earlier this year the Pentagon designated the company a supply-chain risk after it attempted to place usage guardrails on its own technology. Anthropic is challenging the designation in court, even as other parts of the administration have taken a friendlier stance. The internal contradiction — one arm of government throwing up obstacles while another opens doors — makes the outcome of tonight's dinner hard to predict.
