SpaceXAI backs controversial Omarchy Linux with $1.5M in Grok compute

SpaceXAI has joined the Omacom fund overseeing Omarchy as a founding corporate patron, kicking in $1.5 million worth of Grok tokens — roughly 5.5 million shekels — for David Heinemeier Hansson's Linux distro. Per Hansson's announcement, the credits go to accelerating development, code review, and bug fixes. Not cash. Compute on Grok's infrastructure.

Hansson, the Dane behind Ruby on Rails and Basecamp co-founder, has turned into a lightning rod well outside developer circles. In a July post he likened immigrants to wolves: "When wolves get out of control, you shoot them." That rhetoric dragged Omarchy into a public brawl over whether open-source projects should accept contributions from creators with extreme views.

1Password and Cloudflare have already caught flak for funding Omarchy. Pressed on the Decoder podcast by Nilay Patel, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said he doesn't see his job as "policing different political beliefs." That answer became the go-to quote in the debate over corporate responsibility in open source.

The Grok-Omarchy tie-up aligns two tech figures famous for deliberate provocation: Elon Musk on one side, Hansson on the other. Compute instead of cash restricts the project's flexibility but locks in LLM access for automated code review. No performance metrics or concrete timeline for the promised speedup have been published.
