Figma launches a Markdown editor and AI-agent tooling at its first Config in India

Figma used its first Config conference outside the United States — held in India — to roll out a toolkit designed to turn the platform into a single source of truth for the AI agents that now write code and generate designs. The centerpiece is **Figma Specs**, a Markdown-based editor that lets teams define a living design language in a standalone file or alongside the canvas, with direct links to elements on the canvas, FigJam diagrams, code layers and existing designs.
A living spec for agents and teams
What makes Specs different isn’t rich-text editing; it’s the ability to anchor definitions in the actual context of the product. Teams can now import design libraries, code libraries and style guides into one central system, and Figma’s own agents — as well as third-party ones — are expected to treat that repository as a binding constitution when they generate components or mutate prototypes. The company frames the move as a response to the non-deterministic nature of generative models, providing a “steering wheel” that nudges them toward more predictable output.
Code Layers graduates to public beta
At the same time, Figma is opening **Code Layers** to a public beta after a private beta launch in June. The layers drop live code directly onto the canvas, turning prototypes into genuinely interactive artifacts, and the on-canvas agent can now translate a design into code or rewrite an existing snippet to match a prototype. Chief Design Officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch that Figma sees itself as the place where software teams “decide what to build and ship,” and the data she cited sharpens the gap: 17× more lines of code are written today versus the past, but only 1.3× more versions actually ship. Most of that code is written to discover what the product should be, not to send it to production.
MCP expansion and Payload integration
On the ecosystem side, Figma announced support for more than 20 new tools in its MCP protocol, among them Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot and the Indian startup Sarvam. Last year’s acquisition of the headless CMS **Payload** is now shipping inside Figma Make for building dynamic sites and managing content directly; the company says Payload downloads have jumped sixfold in the last 12 months.
India as Figma’s second-largest market
Hosting the first international Config in India was deliberate. Figma opened its first office there late last year — spanning sales, partnerships, product and support — and reports that India is now its largest market outside the U.S. by user count. According to company data, the platform serves 40% of the top 100 companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange, making the region a strategic growth engine rather than a secondary market.
