Stepfather used xAI’s Grok to generate 7,000 child sexual images, lawsuit alleges

A lawsuit filed by three teenage plaintiffs from Tennessee accuses xAI, the artificial-intelligence arm of SpaceX, of failing to implement basic safeguards that could have prevented the chatbot Grok from being used to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The plaintiffs seek class-action status and allege that the platform X was inundated with millions of sexual images generated by Grok earlier this year, indicating a widespread problem.
Jane Doe 4, identified as one of the plaintiffs, joined the suit after a report in the Washington Post said her stepfather used Grok to create more than 7,000 explicit images from a photograph taken when she was 11 years old. Two days after authorities uncovered the material in a raid, the stepfather was found dead by suicide.
Doe was quoted as saying, “Unrestricted access to these tools spreads at an enormous speed. It takes ordinary lives and turns them into child sexual abuse.” The case illustrates how a single innocent photo can be transformed into a massive repository of illegal content through an accessible generative tool, without requiring advanced technical expertise.
TechCrunch contacted xAI for comment but has not received a response. The legal proceedings are expected to examine whether the company met reasonable duties of care, including prompt filtering, blocking the generation of images of real individuals, and providing reporting and removal mechanisms, or whether it launched the product without adequate protections. The emergency line 988 remains available for anyone in distress or experiencing suicidal thoughts.
