Google pushes Gemini and Search deep into the education routine

Google launched Wednesday a broad suite of AI-powered learning tools in Search and Gemini, aiming to make its assistant the primary destination for students. The move puts the company in direct competition with OpenAI and dedicated startups such as Knowt and Gauth, which already offer their own practice and learning platforms. The announcement arrives as the market is saturated with tools promising “to make learning easier”, but Google is betting on deep integration into products already in the hands of users.
In Search, users now receive interactive visual displays within AI Overview; a query for “pH scale” will show a simulation that lets users adjust values and see changes in real time. AI Mode takes this a step further: a follow-up prompt such as “place citrus fruits on the pH scale” generates a personalized experience for that specific question. At the same time, Search can now generate custom practice quizzes across subjects—from science and math to humanities and languages, for example “create a quiz with the most common SAT vocabulary”.
In the coming weeks Lens will gain interactive learning capability: users can photograph an exercise or worksheet, and the model will explain the concept, flag possible errors and offer guidance when users get stuck. A complementary feature lets users upload files—PDFs, presentations, documents, even photos of handwritten notes—to receive a consolidated document of key concepts. The combination of visual recognition and textual processing is intended to cover most scenarios where a learner is blocked by raw material.
On the Gemini side, the headline innovation is the ability to send the model into multi-step research in Gemini Live, receive a notification when it finishes, and then discuss the findings verbally without leaving the chat open. The answers themselves are richer: tables, grids and functional 3-D simulations are built ad-hoc from the prompt. A request such as “show me how DNA works in 3-D” will produce a model that can be rotated and zoomed, not just a static image.
Gemini also receives a dedicated API that aggregates all learning tools—note-taking, flashcards, practice quizzes—into a single interface. Google did not invent the category, but it leverages its existing infrastructure—Search, Lens, language model, voice interface—to offer an integrated package that smaller startups struggle to replicate. The open question is whether this integration will translate into habitual usage or remain an extra layer that students bypass in favor of familiar tools.
