Grok outputs gibberish as xAI team shrinks

Users of Grok woke up this week to a model that spewed nonsensical strings. Instead of coherent answers, the xAI chatbot began outputting word salads such as “match it without and your they and two for planets can practical and often cheese” (a literal example of the gibberish), and in other cases a chain of links to reinforcement-learning papers. The problem was first reported on Wednesday morning and is primarily associated with Grok Lite on the web interface.

The bug is not uniform; Tracrane was unable to reproduce it in their tests, suggesting a point-specific impact on a small subset of users. Affected users report complete confusion; refreshing the session resolves the issue in most cases, though some report the gibberish persisting after multiple reloads. The Grok account on X.com remains functional, and the problem is limited to direct queries on Grok.com.

The official Grok account on X confirmed the incident on Thursday morning, describing it as “a temporary and rare glitch that creates a word salad”. The status page indicated all services are operating normally without incidents, and the official recommendation is to start a new chat or click “regenerate”, which usually fixes the problem immediately. xAI itself did not respond to Tracrane request for comment.

The backdrop to the issue is a significant turnover in staff. According to a report by The Information from May, xAI has lost most of its founding team and at least 50 researchers and engineers in recent months. In July the company launched its latest base model, described as “opossum-level, but faster, more token-efficient and cheaper”, a claim that has not yet been measured in independent benchmarks.

For now the glitch appears to be an isolated incident with a simple workaround, but it adds to ongoing questions about xAI’s operational stability. With the professional team shrinking dramatically while a new flagship model is being rolled out, the likelihood of production bugs increases. Users encountering gibberish should refresh, and if that does not help, open a new session.
