Mysterious AI model Ox Alpha released free on OpenRouter sparks online speculation

The Ox Alpha model landed on OpenRouter on Thursday as a free-to-use offering, described in the listing as a “model of thinking developed for code, sustained agentic work and production loads.” The entry explicitly labels it a “secret model” that is “developed and operated by a third-party supplier that chose to remain anonymous during the preview period.” Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe—the company acquiring OpenRouter—called the model “very impressive” in a post on X.

Beyond the generic description, OpenRouter has not released performance metrics, context-window size, or architectural details. The phrase “sustained agentic work” refers to the ability to execute multi-step tasks over extended periods without human intervention, a capability current models still struggle to achieve. The supplier’s decision to stay anonymous at this stage is unusual in a market where firms typically rush to claim credit for technical breakthroughs.

Analyst Andrew Curran reported on Friday that early speculation centered on GLM models from the Chinese firm Z.ai, but “this morning people seem less certain about everything.” Wccftech initially posted that evidence pointed to GLM, then updated to suggest Ox Alpha might be an unreleased version of MAI, a model Microsoft is reportedly developing in secret.
