Z.ai identified as lab behind Ox Alpha model that topped leaderboards

At the end of the week the technical community floated speculation about the lab that launched Ox Alpha, a model that appeared anonymously on OpenRouter and already rose to the top of performance tables against leading models. Bloomberg, confirmed by the company, said it is Z.ai, the lab behind the GLM series.

Z.ai confirmed that Ox Alpha is the latest iteration of the GLM series. The series entered headlines recently when Hugging Face used it to defend against an attack attributed to OpenAI agents. The company describes the model as a "reasoning model built for coding, prolonged agentic work and production loads", i.e., long-term software-engineering tasks, complex reasoning and processes that combine text with visual context.

The weights are slated for release on Wednesday, after which developers will be free to build on the model. The move adds to a growing wave of inexpensive, high-capacity Chinese models that threaten to take market share from expensive frontier-model companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Earlier this month Z.ai released GLM-5.3, which it says competes with Anthropic’s Fable 5 on some benchmarks. TechCrunch reached out to the company for further comment.
