Google tightens Android memory requirements as chip shortage bites

Google this week introduced two new quality requirements for Android apps, a direct response to a memory-chip shortage that is being driven by the AI data-center boom. The company says the mobile industry faces "significant hardware supply constraints that are changing memory availability in devices," a shift that ultimately degrades the user experience. The move reflects a new reality in which memory can no longer be treated as a cheap, unlimited resource — especially in entry-level devices where price points dictate modest specifications.
The first requirement sets new performance thresholds across several areas, including dynamic memory usage and bitmap handling. Google is also adding code-optimization rules designed to prevent slowdowns and performance-related crashes. To help developers stay within the limits, the company is rolling out alert tools that flag when an app exceeds the new thresholds; deeper diagnostic tools, including a Memory Limiter feature that will block apps from consuming excessive device memory, are slated to arrive later this year.
Developers have until February 2027 to comply with the new memory thresholds, which are documented on the Android developers site. At the same time, Google will require every Play Store app to support Zero Tap Sign-In during device migration by April 2027. The standard obliges any app with user login — whether optional or mandatory — to automatically restore the signed-in state when a user moves between Android devices.
The implementation leans on the Android Restore Credentials API, which is meant to enable the seamless transition without passwords or additional authentication codes. The requirement applies to every app in the store that offers user login, regardless of business model or user-base size. Google frames the changes as a way to let app and game developers keep delivering a quality experience in a market where memory may be less available — language that masks the real economic pressure on the supply chain.
