Caterpillar brings autonomous mining expertise to construction sites

Caterpillar is applying decades of automation experience from its mining operations to a broader artificial-intelligence rollout. The company notes that most organizations trying to adopt AI find it hard to embed the technology into everyday work processes. In mining, Caterpillar faced a physical version of that problem—a shortage of labor and hazardous conditions that made automation essential—and is now translating those solutions to more dynamic settings.

The autonomous toolbox originated in mining, where Caterpillar today sells autonomous haul trucks, drills, underground loaders, excavators and remotely controlled construction equipment. It also provides a software command center, fleet management and remote field intelligence as part of the autonomous suite. “Now we are in a super exciting period where we can take all the learning from mining and bring it to much more dynamic environments, work sites, quarries and construction sites,” said Vice President of Technology Jaime Mineart at the AI4 conference in Las Vegas earlier this month.

A flagship application is the Cat AI Assistant, which lets a field technician standing beside a machine use voice commands to pull repair procedures, locate possible faults and identify required parts before work begins. The tool is already in use by customers, operators and technicians, and draws on a proprietary database built from 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and more than 16 petabytes of structured data. Simultaneously, the company runs AI for site scanning and the creation of digital twins in manufacturing for operational analysis, and employs AI agents to modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and detect defects earlier.

Mineart stresses that building the technology is only part of the challenge; deploying an autonomous machine is not the same as changing a work site to use AI. Organizations must rethink how people work alongside the technology and which existing processes need to change. “The hard part of physical autonomy and AI is integrating the technology at the client site and in the workflow,” she says. Caterpillar relies on experienced operators to train the systems, leveraging decades of institutional knowledge, and as machines become more autonomous, some operators shift from controlling a single machine to supervising several machines from a remote command center.

The shift creates a new training challenge for the company’s 118 thousand workers. Caterpillar plans to invest $100 million over the next five years in AI, autonomy and robotics training for its workforce. The spending aligns with a broader surge in demand for AI infrastructure that is already reflected in revenue: second-quarter revenue reached a record $20.5 billion, driven by strong demand for power-generation equipment for data-center facilities. The power-generation segment jumped 72% to $3.10 billion, and CEO Joe Creed noted that “no one is slowing down” regarding demand for cloud and generative AI infrastructure
