Google reshuffles AI leadership as key figures move to new roles

Google is reorganizing the top of its artificial-intelligence division, and several central names received new positions this week. In some cases, including Jeff Dean, the new roles are no longer within Google. Dean, regarded as one of the most senior engineers in the company’s history, is one of the names who have left or shifted to other positions as part of the current reshuffle.

The context is not especially favorable for Google. The company’s models appear currently inferior to the leading products emerging from Anthropic and OpenAI. The obvious question is whether this signals an internal crisis, or whether it reflects something entirely different. Another possibility raised is that Demis Hassabis, who heads the AI unit, is simply looking for a more interesting project than virtual assistants.
