Google signs multi-year deal with mrbeast to promote gemini and fitbit air

The first video in the series will drop on 5 September and will follow Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson and his crew as they attempt to survive in three of the planet’s most extreme settings—jungle, desert and the Arctic. Google says the teams will use Gemini to spot hazards, cope with extreme weather and stay one step ahead of on-ground conditions. No performance metrics or comparisons to existing tools were released, only a promise that the model “will help”.

The agreement extends beyond a single survival episode. Donaldson will also employ a Fitbit Air in an upcoming challenge and will appear in a Gemini advertising campaign for Google. The tie-in pairs a smartwatch that monitors physiological data in real time with a language model that generates text, both marketed as “survival tools”. Google did not disclose the payment amount or the compensation structure.

The deal was announced months after the MrBeast channel became the first YouTube channel ever to exceed 500 million subscribers. Bloomberg reports that YouTube offers top creators exclusive contracts to prevent talent from drifting to rival platforms, most notably Netflix, which signs creators to direct production deals. Google’s move appears less a pure technology partnership and more a hold strategy: secure the platform’s biggest creator, equip him with branded tools, and keep his audience on YouTube.

In practice, the arrangement is not a technological breakthrough but a large-scale product placement that few brands can afford. Gemini has not been field-tested against alternatives, and the Fitbit Air has not been benchmarked against dedicated survival sport watches. What is clear is that an audience of half a billion subscribers will see Google’s logo in action without a prominent disclosure that the content is sponsored. If it looks like an ad, behaves like an ad and is funded like an ad, it is probably an ad.
