Apple unveils Duo, its first foldable phone with an AI-calibrated hinge

At a Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday Apple introduced the Duo, the company's first foldable device. The category has drawn consumer interest for years, yet most existing models suffer from accelerated wear — inherent to a mechanism that endures roughly twice the mechanical stress of a conventional smartphone. Apple says it has addressed the problem at the design and manufacturing level, not merely through materials.
According to hardware chief Johny Srouji, every hinge in the Duo undergoes individual calibration during production. Algorithms scan the topology of each component with a confocal laser, then deposit up to 25 micro-layers of custom photopolymer via 3D printing to eliminate "residual waviness" — microscopic irregularities that create uneven friction over time. The approach marks a fundamental departure from a standard assembly line, where an identical hinge is fitted into an identical mount at a fixed tolerance.
Beyond the hinge, Apple added a custom nano-texture finish, adapted from the Pro Display XDR, to cut glare and reflections, and a multi-layer lamination strategy to reinforce the flexible display's overall durability. The company did not publish detailed specifications for the lamination stack, and there are no official drop-test or fold-cycle metrics yet for comparison with rivals such as the Galaxy Z Fold or Pixel Fold.
The promises are striking, but the category's history shows that problems emerge after months of daily use — dust in the hinge, material fatigue in the display, delamination at the edges. Apple disclosed no accelerated life-testing data and offered no guaranteed fold-cycle rating. Until units reach independent reviewers and real users, the Duo remains an interesting engineering announcement, not a durability proof.
