AI data centers double their IT power capacity every ten months

Since mid-2024 the world record for IT power — the electricity available to chips, servers and other compute gear, excluding cooling and overhead — has been breaking itself at a steady exponential clip. The current title holder is xAI's Colossus 2, estimated at 950 megawatts, according to a new Data Insight analysis from Epoch AI drawing on the organization's Frontier Data Centers database.

Behind the numbers

The database catalogs 308 dated milestones across 86 facilities with non-zero IT power, spanning 2021 through 2030. Researchers zeroed in on a window opening in mid-2024, when the AI investment boom began delivering completed facilities such as Colossus 1, and closing in May 2028, giving a forecast horizon roughly equal in length to the historical one. Most estimates come from satellite imagery (primarily visible cooling infrastructure), public disclosures and permit filings; a few, notably Colossus 1 and 2, disclosed enough detail for higher-confidence figures.

The statistical trend

A log-linear OLS regression on the six historical record-setting events yields a growth rate of 2.3× per year (90% confidence interval: 1.9×–2.7×) and a doubling time of ten months (90% CI: 8–13 months). Two facilities expected online by 2027 — expansions at New Carlisle and Colossus 2 — fall inside the forecast envelope, at the 14th and 29th percentiles respectively.

The 2028 deviation

Three facilities projected for 2028 tell a different story: all land below the forecast envelope, between the 2nd and 3rd percentiles, each at roughly half the predicted power. Epoch stresses that the small sample size and uncertainty in both power estimates and dates make it difficult to tell whether the trend is genuinely slowing or whether data on larger, as-yet-undisclosed facilities is simply missing.

Physical limits, not just computational ones

The choice of IT power over compute capacity is deliberate: chip energy efficiency varies across facilities, so the power leader is not necessarily the FLOPS leader. The trend reflects the local physical constraints the industry runs into and works around — power availability, cooling, permitting — not just silicon progress.
