Huawei moves Ascend 960DT launch to Q1 2027, two quarters early

Huawei announced at Huawei Connect yesterday that its Ascend 960DT AI chip will reach the market in the first quarter of 2027, pulling the schedule forward from the original third-quarter target. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that performance is expected to double generation over generation. Rotating chairman David Wang presented the revised timeline. The disclosure lands one week before U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet in Washington on Sept. 24.
The chip does not stand alone. Huawei is building what it calls the Peerium Computing Architecture around it, an infrastructure based on UnifiedBus technology that links processors, memory, storage and networking into a single massive computer. The first systems on the architecture are the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster; the latter can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards. Rotating chairman Eric Xu said in a company statement that the goal is training and inference systems at a scale the company has not previously achieved.
Analyst Rui Ma flagged a troubling discrepancy. Huawei previously described an Atlas 960 SuperPoD supporting 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, while the current announcement references a system of only 4,096 chips. "The chip itself is arriving much earlier, but the SuperPoD they showed is significantly smaller than originally planned," Ma wrote. The company offered no explanation for the gap and has not published benchmarks to substantiate the claimed performance doubling.
The move unfolds under severe U.S. restrictions on access to advanced chip technology. Ma assessed that the curbs will not halt China because "the bet on technological independence is too high at this stage." Trump has rejected calls to slow AI development on safety grounds, arguing the United States must preserve its edge over China. Xu told the Financial Times that Chinese companies need to accelerate development to understand the risks of more powerful systems, framing the independence race as a strategic necessity for Beijing.
